MAD Tales submission guidelines

The Arts Council of Mansfield MAD Tales project is a celebration of local writing by new, emerging and unpublished writers in Mansfield. Entry is free. We invite submissions of writing by children, young people and adults. Approximately 20 stories will be selected and published in a MAD Tales booklet. Each writer whose work has been selected in the booklet will receive a free copy, will work with an editor and will be invited to read their work at the launch party in late October as part of the Spring Arts Festival.

MAD Tales important dates:

Friday 18 September 2015 Entries close at midnight. If posting, the envelope must be postmarked on or before 18 September.

Tuesday 6 October, 2015  Announcement of the writing to be included in the booklet

Thursday 29 October, 2015  Launch party with readings by authors – 6:00pm at The Deck on High, 15 High St, Mansfield


  1. We are looking for writing by local, unpublished authors. The award is open to writers living in Mansfield (and district) who have not yet had their writing published commercially (i.e. by a commercial or independent publisher).
  2. Enter your writing in your age category – child (up to 12 years), youth (13-18 years) and adult (19 years and above)
  3. There is no theme. You can submit poetry, prose or non-fiction.
  4. Maximum word length 2000 words for short stories and non-fiction. Maximum poetry length 100 lines.
  5. Submissions must be unpublished (including online) and not under consideration by publishers or entered into another competition.
  6. You must include an entry form with your submission.
  7. Your name must not appear on the submission itself (including the header or footer), as all pieces will be considered anonymously.
  8. You can submit up to three pieces of writing. Selection will be made by a committee of writers, editors and teachers, who will select ‘blind’ (without knowing the author’s name)
  9. The selection committee’s decision will be final. No discussion.
  10. Entries close at midnight, Friday 18 September 2015.
    • If posting, the envelope must be postmarked on or before 18 September.
    • If emailing, entries must be sent no later than midnight on 18 September 2015
  11. Stories should be typed in 12 point font and double spaced
  12. Entries will not be returned. Please keep a copy for your own records
  13. Any submission that does not meet these criteria will be ineligible.
